Union Minister for Development of North East, Jyotiraditya Scindia today said that the 72nd Plenary of the NEC that will be chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah tomorrow will lay a new foundation for the speedy growth of the region.
Talking to reporters at the Agartala’s MBB airport upon his arrival this evening, Scindia said that in days to come the North East Region will see a rise and fast paced development, which has been conceptualized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said elaborate discussion will be held on the NEC’s work in the past one year and to fulfil the aspirations of the states from the region.
Scindia said that the Union Home Minister will also chair a Banking Summit which has been organised to reinvigorate the economy’s backbone in the North East region. The banking summit will see participation of all government undertakings and private banks and their heads. He said a thorough analysis will also be done on the record number of bank branches and deposits encashed in the banking system in the north east.
Earlier, officials from various central ministries showcased the development agendas in some of the key areas, which are fundamental for giving further boost to the development of the region during the a pre-plenary thematic and technical sessions.
Union Minister of State for DoNER, Dr Sukanta Majumdar during his address underscored the strategic importance of the North East region and said that the North Eastern region of India is not just a geographically significant part of our country, but it is also an epitome of the nation’s diversity, culture, and strategic importance. “The region’s unique geographical location at the confluence of India, China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal makes it a critical bridge for regional connectivity, trade, and diplomacy”, he added.
Secretary DoNER, Chanchal Kumar during his address said that the presentations by the ministries were informative and crucial to further boost the development of the region. He also said that concerns raised by various states have been well noted by the ministries concerned and all stakeholders will work together to ensure proper implementation of the government schemes in the region.
Secretary NEC Angshuman Dey in his inaugural address said that NEC plenary meetings provide an important platform to discuss the needs, challenges and possible solutions for the NER which have in many ways over the years shaped the policies and approaches towards NER by Government of India and the State governments of North East.
During the last NEC Plenary four areas of importance for NER were discussed that include Investment Policies/Programmes in NER States, Industry 4.0 for NER, Strengthening of logistics in NER and Inter-regional trade/import substitution/export.
In the technical session, discussions were held on six important sectors which are fundamental for giving further boost to the development of the region namely, National Palm Oil Mission and leveraging North East for increasing Palm Oil Acreage, 4G Saturation Project (State Dependencies, Financial Inclusion (Opening of Bank/IPPB Branch in Uncovered Villages, Unelectrified Villages, Road Connectivity and PM Electric Drive Revolution.
