Sixty-one police officers from around the North East graduated from the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) today. The passing out parade of the 48th Batch Basic Course trainees was held at the academy campus at Umsaw village, Ri-Bhoi.
The 48th Basic Course, which commenced training in September 2020, comprised 16 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) from Arunachal Pradesh, 10 DSPs from Tripura, 5 Sub-Inspectors (SIs) from Manipur, 10 SIs from Sikkim and 20 SIs from Meghalaya Home Guards & Civil Defence. Twelve of the 61 officers were women.
“These trainees underwent a very well researched and planned basic training,” a NEPA press release said. “As per basic training module these trainees were trained in indoor subjects viz Police Science, Legal Studies and Social Science and in the outdoor, training was imparted on Drill, Weapons Training, Physical Efficiency, Police Operations and Tactics. Besides, the trainees underwent training on Horse Riding, Swimming, First Aid and Motor Vehicle Driving. A short module on Jungle Camp was also organised where they carried out Cordon and Search Operations, Ambush and Counter Ambush, Raid, seizure etc. Besides, the trainees were given opportunities to have interaction with prominent guest faculty in policing and related matters.”
Besides successful completion of Basic training, the trainees also successfully obtained a postgraduate diploma in “Police Administration and Investigation” from Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice, Jodhpur.
In a bid to build a well-rounded personality and promote camaraderie, team spirit and sportsmanship, the trainees were encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities through various clubs like extempore and debate club, quiz club, sports club, social service club, literary club and IT club.
Despite heavy rain, the trainee officers put on a spectacular parade. Rishi Longdo, DSP of Arunachal Pradesh Police, was the parade commander. Deepak Kumar, NEPA director, a highly-decorated officer reviewed the parade. The brass band of the Meghalaya Home Guards & Civil Defence, NEPA pipe band and NEPA horse contingent added colour to the parade.
Kumar declared and handed over cash reward to the brass band for an excellent band display. Kumar congratulated the young officers for successfully completing their one-year training programme. He recalled that these trainees had to face the first and second waves of Covid-19 and appreciated the efforts of indoor faculty and outdoor trainers for imparting highly professional training.
Longdo was bestowed with The Governor of Meghalaya Sword of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal for All Round Best Probationer. Shuvam Nongrum of Meghalaya Home Guards & Civil Defence was bestowed with The Governor of Meghalaya Sword of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal for All Round Best SI Cadet. Samudra Debbarma, DSP of Tripura Police, and Palmula Bhutia, SI of Sikkim Police, were bestowed with The Chief Minister Meghalaya Baton of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal for Best Indoor Probationer and Best Indoor Cadet. Paul Jerang, DSP of Arunachal Pradesh Police, and Nongrum were bestowed with The Chief Minister Arunachal Pradesh Baton of Honour & NEPA Silver Medal for Best Outdoor Probationer and Best Outdoor Cadet.
For exemplary conduct, Debanjali Ray of Tripura Police and Kunal Mohora of Sikkim Police were the recipients of BR Lall Academy Running Trophy and NEPA Silver Medal. Nongrum was adjudged as Best Sportsman and Sengsalyne Sengatchi Ch Marak of Meghalaya Home Guards & Civil Defence was adjudged as Best Sportswoman and awarded the Academy Running Trophy.
Other cadet SIs from Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards who were awarded for their performance during the year-long training are Tokiwayoo Iongwai (Best Cadet Weapons Training) and Mark Andrew Thubru (Best Cadet in Physical Training).
By winning the Sword of Honour, through Nongrum, for the third time in a row, the Meghalaya Civil Defence and Home Guards has achieved a hat-trick as trainee SIs from the department were adjudged all-round best cadets in 2007, 2015 and now in 2021.
