Shillong, Aug 4: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shillong has issued a flash flood warning for Ri-Bhoi and Eastern West Khasi Hills districts, valid till 2 pm, August 5.
IMD said flash floods are likely at many places in the next 24 hours, with widespread waterlogging expected in low-lying areas including Jorabat and nearby watersheds. Traffic and travel routes are likely to be disrupted. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel. The alert was issued through the CAP-SACHET system.
IMD has also forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Meghalaya for the next three days, with orange and red warnings for East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills from August 3 to August 5. Heavy rain is also likely in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) warned that runoff from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills feeds major rivers in Assam and could worsen flood conditions downstream. Districts at risk include Cachar, Dima Hasao, West Karbi Anglong, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Tinsukia. Rainfall in Nagaland may impact Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
ASDMA noted that intense rain earlier this month had already caused flooding, damage to infrastructure and transport disruption in Upper Assam.
In Meghalaya, authorities flagged risks of landslides, flash floods and slow vehicular movement. Emergency agencies in both states have been put on alert.
