More than 4,000 people have been displaced from their homes due to the extreme weather events witnessed in Meghalaya this rainy season.
According to data released by the State Disaster Management Authority, 4,142 people are sheltering across 26 relief camps. Almost all of this number can be attributed to the intense rainfall that has battered Meghalaya in the last week.
Twenty-eight people are stated to have died due to the extreme weather events since April 1. However, this is only an increase of 15 since the last report on June 13 and there are known to have been at least 20 deaths in the past few days, which could either mean that the SDMA data is not fully up to date or that some of the recent deaths were not counted for one reason or another.
The June 13 report also stated that seven animals had died but today’s data has that figure at 309, meaning that 302 have died in the last one week.
A total of 822 villages have been hit by the bad weather and 5.86 lakh people affected. Over 4,000 houses have been damaged – 262 fully, 3,437 partially and 95 severely.
