Three men were arrested on suspicion of murdering a 36-year-old woman in the Jadigittim area of South Garo Hills.
It was on June 30 that Nongalbibra police station was informed that the body of a woman had been found in Jadigittim.
The body was found in such a situation that rape was not ruled out when the case was initially registered but subsequently it was confirmed that the victim, Roopa Rabha, was not raped. However, she had been robbed by her assailants.
In view of the seriousness of the case, a special investigation team (SIT) was constituted to assist the investigating officer. Through “technical analysis and human intelligence”, the SIT was able to identify three suspects, who were subsequently arrested and found with incriminating evidence, SGH Superintendent of Police Shailendra Bamaniya said.
The three were identified today by police. David R Marak, alias Bitbit, who hails from Rongsu Rongrigittim in SGH but who is currently resident of Kacharipara in the Goalpara district of Assam, where he was picked up from.
Demen R Marak is a resident of Tatolgre in North Garo Hills and was arrested from Denggnangre, NGH. Salnara R Marak is also a resident of Tatolgre. His father is listed as Temul Marak, the same name of David’s father but police did not mention whether the two are brothers. Salnara was arrested from Nongchram in East Garo Hills.
During the investigation, two handguns, two machetes and a knife were recovered from the possession of the accused, which police said were used to commit the crime. Bamaniya added that the gang were planning to take up extortion in Garo Hills.
