The District Magistrate of South West Khasi Hills has passed an order under Section 144 of the CrPC to curtail overloaded trucks from using weakened bridges in the district.
This comes after a bridge at Larem, on the Pariong-Shillong-Nongstoin Road, collapsed today as a truck was driving across it.
According to the order, there are a total of 25 weak bridges under Ranikor sub division.
Trucks often defy load limits, so the DM has promulgated an order under the CrPC prohibiting heavy laden vehicles over 9 tonnes on 25 semi-permanent or weak bridges under Ranikor division.
There are five such bridges on the 38.52km Jakrem-Ranikor Road (Bridge Nos. 19/1, 19/2, 20/1, 20/2, 21/1), seven on the 29km Mawphlang-Balat-Gomaghat-Maheskola Road (17/1, 18/1, 24/1, 25/1, 25/2, 26/1, 26/2) and two on the 3.50km Ranikor-Nolikata Road (1/1, 1/2).
There are also three on the 15km Maheskola-Darengiri Road (5/1, 6/1, 7/1), four on the 8.14km Nongjri-Nongkulang Road (3/1, 3/2, 4/1, 5/1), three on the 7.68km Nongkulang-Maweit Road (7/1, 7/2, 7/3) and one on the 8.55km Rangthong-Rangjadong-Ngunraw Road (2/1).
This order came into force with immediate effect.
