One more Covid-related death that of a 24-year-old man from Shillong, took the death toll from the disease in Meghalaya to 79 today even as recoveries outpaced new infections for the seventh day in a row.
The deceased was identified as Jiten Sunar of Upper Mawprem here. He was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital on October 13 and tested positive for Covid-19 the same day. He died today at 12:30pm. The cause of death was identified as aspiration pneumonia with Covid-19 and chronic infections. Aspiration pneumonia is a type of lung infection that is due to a relatively large amount of material from the stomach or mouth entering the lungs.
Meanwhile, the state also recorded 81 new cases of the virus and 111 recoveries. The total number of recoveries from the disease now stands at 7,091, or 81 percent of the total of 8,801. There are 1,631 active cases in the state.
Of the new cases, East Khasi Hills accounted for 51, West Garo Hills 21, West Jaiñtia Hills six and there was one each in South Garo Hills, East Jaiñtia Hills and East Garo Hills.
The new recoveries were divided between East Khasi Hills (74), Ri-Bhoi (11), South Garo Hills (seven), West Garo Hills (seven), East Jaiñtia Hills (five), West Khasi Hills (two), South West Khasi Hills (two) and one each in South West Garo Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills and East Garo Hills.
