Nongpoh, Apr 30: Aimed at promoting and supporting eri silk farmers and weavers in Raid Nongtluh, a yarn bank was inaugurated at Umkon village in the Ri-Bhoi district.
The yarn bank was constructed with an investment of about Rs. 7 lakh under the Meglamp scheme of MBMA. In addition, a working capital support of Rs. 42 lakhs will be allocated in instalments through the FOCUS scheme. This financial backing is expected to aid farmers and weavers in efficiently collecting, storing, and marketing Ryndia yarn, thus improving their income and overall livelihoods.
Speaking at the event, Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem emphasised the importance of Ryndia yarn and expressed satisfaction with the growing recognition of Ryndia silk both within and outside the state, highlighting its recent official acknowledgment and support.
He revealed plans for a new craft village project designed to further benefit local farmers and weavers, solidifying the region’s commitment to promoting its rich silk heritage.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by A. Suting, deputy project director of MBMA, Nicholas Syngkli, chairman of Umkon IVCS, and Teibun Rynshon, manager of Umkon IVCS, local leaders, weavers, and community members.
