Shillong, Jun 17: The Department of Tourism hosted a state-level consultative workshop focused on developing global standard tourist destinations.
Held at the State Guest House in Taraghar, here the workshop was attended by officers and stakeholders, aiming to collaboratively shape the future of tourism in Meghalaya.
In his keynote speech, Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira highlighted the importance of establishing a dedicated destination management organization (DMO) to oversee tourism development responsibly and sustainably. He emphasised that tourism growth should enhance rather than compromise the local environment and cultural identity. The focus is on creating high-quality infrastructure that supports both international tourists and local communities, he added.
Tourism Commissioner & Secretary Rosetta Mary Kurbah stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders, urging them to share innovative ideas for realising this vision. Plans include attracting international tourists with experiential stays and improving connectivity and infrastructure.
Discussion was held on the iconic monolith tower, set to be the second tallest public monument in India, designed to showcase Meghalaya’s rich culture and traditions. The tower is planned around the cost of ₹450 crore and will stand at 123 meters.
Discussions were also held regarding Umiam on its transformation into a world-class tourist destination. The department said stakeholders are actively collaborating to establish a roadmap focusing on infrastructure, environment and enhanced connectivity.
The day concluded with an interactive session, aimed at elevating Meghalaya’s profile, attract global tourists, and boost local economies through strategic partnerships and community engagement.
