A woman who was living with her boyfriend in a local hotel after leaving their families has been found dead in unexplained circumstances.
Police were informed on October 27 that a woman was in an unconscious state at Mahavir Lodge, a hotel in the Mawlonghat neighbourhood of Shillong.
On visiting the scene, police found the woman, identified as Neeru Rai, unconscious in a hotel room and she was taken to a health centre but was declared brought dead by the medical officer on arrival.
Rai had been staying at the hotel for the past month with her boyfriend Sajan Biswa.
On being questioned by police, Biswa confirmed this and said that Rai had fallen while inside the hotel’s common toilet on October 26, with the door locked from the inside. Biswa and hotel staff had to break the door lock to get to Rai.
An inquest has been held and an autopsy carried out. Samples have also been collected for the Forensic Science Laboratory. Rai’s body has been handed over to relatives for the last rites. A case of unnatural death has been registered by police.
