A wine shop at the centre of a small storm in Ri-Bhoi once again made news for another kerfuffle led by those opposed to its opening.
Residents of Lumbyrhing and Umryngksai villages, supported by a pressure group, today reiterated their opposition to the wine shop, which is located on National Highway 6 between the two villages.
The shop is owned by one Cornelius Kharhunai, a resident of Nongpoh. He had acquired permission and the requisite licence from the government to run the liquor establishment. He also obtained a no-objection certificate from the village of Pahammardoloi. However, the other two villages deny that the land on which the shop falls belongs to Pahammardoloi.
Today, residents rushed to the spot where the wine shop stands and demanded its immediate closure.
