Police in West Garo Hills have issued a warning about fraudsters using WhatsApp in an attempt to scam the public out of money.
According to police, the modus operandi of the fraudsters is to pretend to be the Deputy Commissioner or Superintendent of Police and, using one pretext or another, send messages from a particular number (8420621299) to unsuspecting members of the public with a request to purchase Amazon gift cards. The targetted victims are told that their money will be reimbursed.
“Please stay alert and don’t fall into this trap,” the police warned the public, adding that they are investigating the matter and will take action against the scamsters.
