The popularity of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) is largely because it is a new entity and could wither away quickly.
This was the gist of what National People’s Party (NPP) state youth wing president, Kitborlang Nongrem, said recently after a party meeting in Mawkyrwat.
Fresh from its victory in the state Assembly election, the NPP is hoping to win the district council elections in Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills as well as the Lok Sabha polls next year.
Nongrem downplayed the VPP’s chances, saying that since 1998 to date regional parties like the VPP have excited the youth of the state but ended up losing their way.
“The excitement of the people towards the VPP at present is just like when the KHNAM party was newly formed,” Nongrem said. KHNAM has all but vanished, left to make political statements and press releases but failing to win many votes.
Nongrem said that he hopes that the VPP does not lose its way like the other parties that do not even have MDCs and MLAs at present.
