The Village Defence Party (VDP) in Sonapyrdi, East Jaiñtia Hills district today detained a Bangladeshi national who illegally crossed over to Meghalaya.
According to the VDP president, Boikmen Mynthoi the person was detected while they were patrolling the village at around 5 pm. He said the person admitted to have crossed over to Meghalaya from Bangladesh and was heading towards Ladrymbai.
Mynthoi said the person has been handed over to the police in Lumshnong.
The VDP has raised concerns over border security and appealed to the government to enhance security measures to prevent illegal immigration amid the crisis in the neighbouring country.
