Mawkyrwat, Jun 25: Meghalaya police arrested a 22-year-old man from Gujarat in connection with a cyber blackmail case linked to the alleged suicide of a woman in South West Khasi Hills district.
Police identified the accused as Sachin Nishad, a resident of Bhidoor, Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.
The victim reportedly took her own life on April 19. Following her death, her sister filed a complaint, claiming that the victim had been subjected to relentless threats and cyber harassment.
According to the first information report (FIR) at the Mawkyrwat Women Police Station, the accused had maliciously obtained private photographs and videos of the victim, threatening to circulate them through WhatsApp and Instagram unless she complied with his demands.
Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act and launched an investigation.
The accused was tracked at Surat and was arrested on June 23 with the assistance of Palasiya Polic Station, Superintendent of Police Banraplang Jyrwa said.
Meanwhile, police have urged victims of online harassment, blackmail, cyber intimidation, or threats involving private photographs or videos, not to suffer in silence or take any extreme step.
“Such acts are serious criminal offences and law enforcement agencies are committed to taking prompt action against offenders,” Jyrwa said.
Members of the public are also encouraged to report such incidents at the earliest opportunity so that timely intervention, counselling, and legal assistance can be provided.
