Khliehriat, Sep 26: East Jaintia Hills Police recovered three motorcycles suspected to have been stolen from Assam and meant for smuggling to Bangladesh.
Superintendent of Police, Shailender Bamaniya said acting on credible information about two unattended motorcycles at Wahkoh, Umkiang, a police team conducted a search and recovered a Royal Enfield Bullet 350 (AS11U6803) and a Bajaj Discover (AS11S1235) from the bushes.
“The ignition wiring of both motorcycles was found tampered,” Bamaniya said.
He said subsequently, information was received about another motorcycle heading from Ratachera towards Umkiang. Police chased the bike but the rider crashed it by the roadside and escaped into the jungle taking advantage of thick vegetation and darkness.
“During the search, a Hero Xpulse motorcycle, red and black, without registration plate, was recovered. Its ignition wiring was also tampered and it is suspected to be stolen from Assam side,” the SP said.
All three motorcycles were brought to Umkiang PPP for safe custody.
Bamaniya said owners were identified through e-challan and on being contacted, they confirmed the motorcycles were stolen from Silchar, Assam and FIRs were lodged at Arunachal Police Outpost under Silchar Police Station.
“The recovered motorcycles have been handed over to officials of Arunachal Police Outpost under Silchar Police Station, Cachar District, Assam for further legal action,” he added.
