The idea to move the Umsning Community and Rural Development block office in Umsning to Lum Umpih is just a proposal, government sources have insisted.
Yesterday, NGOs and the headman of Lumnongrim Dewlieh reiterated their opposition to the move by forming a Joint Action Committee to fight against the move.
However, the government sources said that the Lum Umpih move was proposed after the land was offered for free.
The other plot of land being offered is at Patarim. However, the Lum Umpih one is more preferable given that it will not cost the government financially.
The existing office is in a congested area while the Lum Umpih one will have more parking space, water supply and better internet connection.
Other problems include an incident of vandalism where stones were hurled at the office in 2019. In 2020 illegal occupants of the staff quarters were reported to the Deputy Commissioner for eviction. It was learnt that the former headman of Lumnongrim had allowed them to stay there.
