Shillong, Sep 30: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) intercepted a bus carrying 42 migrant workers allegedly without valid documents at Umsamlem near Umsning in Ri-Bhoi district and pushed them back to Assam.
The bus bearing registration No. AS 15 AC 1929 was coming from Assam and was stopped on National Highway-6 around 12:30 am on Wednesday, KSU Umsning Circle said.
The union claimed that the workers did not possess valid documents and were being brought into Meghalaya illegally.
Umsning Circle president Lester Nongbet said the workers admitted a middleman was bringing them into the state.
The union said it will track down the facilitator.
The KSU alleged the workers were being taken to cement factories in East Jaintia Hills as cheap labour and said the incident exposes illegal entry despite the Migrant Workers Act, 2020.
The union warned of more checks in the coming days.
