A transformer in Umsawnongkharai in Ri-Bhoi caught fire at 11am today, ruining the peace of the village.
Local residents quickly raised the alarm, initiating efforts to extinguish the flames. Thanks to the prompt arrival of linemen from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL), the fire was eventually brought under control.
According to a lineman, the fire originated from a defect where wires touched due to heavy winds, igniting sparks that spread to the transformer.
Tony Shylla, the village secretary, expressed relief that there were no casualties, though the transformer suffered damage. He commended the linemen for their swift response.
Shylla also called upon MeECL to implement safety measures such as fencing around transformers to mitigate risks for residents in case of future incidents.
