Rehabilitation and improvement works at the Umiam dam will be completed by the end of this month and a meeting has been scheduled for a high-power committee (HPC) to decide on the opening date.
Power Minister AT Mondal who visited the dam rehabilitation and retrofitting work at the Umiam dam today inspected the works and reviewed the progress.
He expressed hope that the bridge would be fully open by the end of the month and informed that a high-power committee would meet on Monday to finalise the opening date.
He said the meeting will be attended by consultants from IIT Guwahati, the Director General of Police, PWD officials, and District Administration representatives from East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts.
Mondal emphasised the importance of completing the remaining works expeditiously to ensure the safety and longevity of the dam.
The minister was accompanied by Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) Chairman cum Managing Director, Sanjay Goyal, Director Generation MePGCL Bloomingstar Wahlang and other officials from MeECL. Officials from ITD Cementation were also present.
The ongoing works undertaken at Umiam dam is part of the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP Phase II & III) which commenced on December 14, 2023.
The main objective of DRIP is rehabilitation and improvement of dams and associated appurtenances. The major works under DRIP includes Drilling and Grouting of Dam, Crack repairing and Hydro mechanical works.
