While the public transport system the country still largely remains inaccessible for people with disabilities a decision by taxi drivers in Shillong will now be seen as an act of benevolence as they have decided not to charge fares from persons with disabilities.
East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association, an umbrella of all cabbies in and around the city took this decision after electing its new president in Wandonbok Jyrwa, who was the former general secretary.
Speaking to reporters, Jyrwa said the association has plans not to charge fares from persons with physical disability. He also added they will also decide on reducing fares for students.
As for the taxi fares, which has seen a massive upturn post the Covid-19 pandemic, the taxi president did not speak much on the subject but said, “The association has always followed government rates.”
Commuters have complained that the taxi drivers in the city have allegedly hiked the fares without seeking any approval from the competent authorities.
While most drivers would claim that the hike in the fare is the result of an increase in petrol prices, Shillongites have always put a questioned mark on the claim, that, fares are not hiked when fuel prices goes down.
Meanwhile, the association during its general meeting held in Malki ground decided to let RTI activist, Disparsing Rani continue as its adviser. Member of the executive committee will be decided on a later day.
The association covers 48 units and 23 circles under its ambit in the district.
