Shillong, Jul 26: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) concluded an intensive search and recovery operation with the retrieval of the body of a missing person from the Wahniangleng River near Phra Mer, Mylliem, on Sunday morning
The operation was initiated on July 22 following receipt of information regarding the disappearance of a resident of Phra Mer, Mylliem. SDRF teams, in close coordination with Mawngap Police and local residents of Laitkroh and Phra Mer, carried out extensive searches in the gorges and along the Wahniangleng River, including the use of an inflatable boat to cover the river stretch from Mawphlang Dam.
Over two days an extensive search operation from Mawphlang Dam to the Wahniangleng River, covering both upstream and downstream sections, was conducted. However, no trace of the missing person was found.
Yesterday, local residents located the body in a confined section of the river. SDRF personnel immediately initiated recovery efforts; however, the operation had to be suspended due to strong water currents and hazardous conditions.
The operation resumed today morning and, at approximately 7:10am, the SDRF team successfully retrieved the body. The deceased was subsequently handed over to the Mawngap Police for completion of the necessary legal formalities.
