Shillong, Jul 27: The Meghalaya cabinet today approved the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026 with the aim of further incentivising the adoption of electric vehicles by members of the public.
The original EV Policy was adopted in 2021 and was to apply for five years. This new policy carries on much of the one it replaces.
Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, minister Marcuise N Marak said individuals purchasing electric vehicles will receive an incentive of Rs 25,000 along with a complete waiver of vehicle registration fees.
The minister also said the government is working to provide additional benefits under the state’s vehicle scrapping policy, which was introduced last year. Owners who produce a valid vehicle scrapping certificate will be eligible for further incentives, although the details and quantum of these benefits will be finalised at a later stage.
Addressing concerns over the limited availability of EV charging infrastructure, Marak said charging facilities can be established at multiple locations and informed that the government has already identified sites where dedicated charging stations will be set up. He added that the state is also pursuing the establishment of a vehicle scrapping facility in Meghalaya.
In another key decision, the cabinet approved Rs 22.37 crore towards land compensation for the construction of a transmission line connecting the Mawkhanu substation. The project will require land along a 6.5km stretch.
The cabinet also approved the renaming of the New Shillong Township Development Agency to the New Shillong Development Authority.
