Shillong, Jul 27: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Monday submitted a letter to the KHADC Chief Executive Member, raising concerns over the rise in trade check gates and the manner of their allotment.
Citing an RTI response, KHNAM said the number of check gates under the Trade Department has increased from 10 in 2025 to 11 in 2026. The 11 gates are located at Mawshynrut, Bangli in South West Khasi Hills, Borsora in SWKH, Byrnihat, Mawiong Khri, Umiam, Athiabari in West Khasi Hills, Baridua in Ri-Bhoi, Majai in Mawryngkneng, Nongprut, and Nongstoiñ.
KHNAM Working President Thomas Passah alleged that the Executive Committee allotted the 10 gates to individuals without issuing a Notice Inviting Tender, justifying it on grounds of “lack of time to call for tenders.”
He added that even in 2026, many work orders have been issued without tender, more than a year later.
Challenging the EC to prove its commitment to “clean and transparent governance,” Passah urged it to cancel all such work orders and call for tender. The party has urged KHADC to ensure transparency in the allotment process for trade check gates.
