Shillong, Jun 24: The State Health & Family Welfare Department has been conferred the prestigious SKOCH Award 2026 for its innovative initiative, “Transforming Breast Cancer Screening in Meghalaya Using Artificial Intelligence.”
The initiative uses AI-based thermal screening technology to support early detection of breast cancer, particularly among women in remote and underserved areas of the State. Implemented as part of Meghalaya’s broader efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare services, the programme integrates community outreach, screening, referral, and follow-up mechanisms to ensure timely diagnosis and care.
A total of 1,683 women screened till date under the pilot initiative, with identified high-risk cases referred for further clinical evaluation, a statement said.
The award, which was presented on June 20 during the 108th SKOCH Summit – Public Policy Forum in New Delhi, was received by Additional Director of Health Services (MCH & FW) Dr. Carolinda Iangrai and State Epidemiologist-cum-State Programme Officer Tenneychell Khongrangjem.
Dedicating the recognition to the healthcare professionals, programme personnel, and frontline health workers the department reiterated its commitment to advancing innovative, evidence-based, and technology-enabled healthcare interventions aimed at improving access, quality, and health outcomes for the people of Meghalaya.
