Shillong, Aug 12: The Meghalaya High Court has refused bail to two teachers accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old student inside a school washroom.
Justice Wanlura Diengdoh said cases of sexual assault against children must be taken very seriously because children are innocent and cannot understand what is happening to them. “No leniency should be shown to the perpetrators,” the court observed, adding that such acts cause deep trauma.
The case was filed on February 24, 2026 against two teachers of BDW International School, Langkyrding. The child told his mother that he was assaulted by the two teachers on four occasions inside the school washroom. The complaint included penetrative assault and inappropriate touching.
Police arrested both teachers on February 25, 2026. A chargesheet was filed on April 24, 2026 under sections of the POCSO Act. The trial has not started yet and the child’s evidence is yet to be recorded.
The court said the child’s statement prima facie showed a case of sexual assault. Looking at the serious nature of the charges, it said bail cannot be granted at this stage. It also noted that the prosecution will still have to prove the case during trial.
The court dismissed the bail petitions of both accused.
