Tourists and visitors to Sohra will now get to enjoy the night view of the road from Mawjrong to Sohrarim as solar street lamps have been installed along the picturesque road.
The office of the Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive), Shillong, as part of the Swachhta Action Plan under Special Campaign 3.0, has installed 49 solar street lamps in Mawjrong, Dympep, Laitsohpliah and Sohrarim at vitally needed points, as identified by the local village authorities.
The villages are on route to the popular tourist destination of Sohra. Although well connected by the Shillong – Sohra road, the four villages so far lack street lighting on these stretches.
The solar street lamp project was completed within 14 days at a cost of around Rs 9 lakh right from the conceptualisation stage.
These solar lights would be highly beneficial for the inhabitants as well as help in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the area.
This initiative by the Customs Department will go a long way in facilitating these villages and help the villagers in their daily life besides helping to further boost tourism and welfare for the people of the area.
With a focus on agriculture and catering to tourist demand, these solar street lamps are poised to enhance safety and convenience for both residents and visitors.
Being small villages with a population of about 600 people each, many amenities are still lacking and these people have to work hard for their living.
The villagers are mainly involved in agriculture and eateries to cater to the tourist demand.
The solar lamp project was inaugurated today by Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)
Addressing the gathering, Agarwal expressed satisfaction that CGST and Customs Zone have taken the novel initiative of providing solar street lights having low maintenance and various lighting adaptability features to conserve energy.
Sohra MLA, Gavin M. Mylliem said it is a matter of pride and happiness that the Chairman of CBIC visited Sohra to inaugurate the solar street lamps in the four villages.
The inauguration was also attended by headmen of the four villages and senior officials of CBIC, Customs Department and local villagers.
