Shillong, Nov 3: Social activist Greneth M Sangma has claimed that disparity persists in Meghalaya with regards to distribution of equitable development in the tourism sector.
A day after Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M Scindia laid the foundation stone for a project worth more that Rs 200 crore in Sohra, the activist wrote a letter to Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira citing imbalance in development.
He said there is “noticeable imbalance” in tourism development between Khasi Hills and Garo Hills.
“Garo Hills, especially South Garo Hills, which boasts numerous tourist spots, has not seen similar sanctioned projects recently,” he stated.
He said the disparity raises questions about equitable development in Meghalaya’s tourism sector.
Urging the minister to address the imbalance in tourism development, he said the government should ensure equitable development across all regions of Meghalaya by promoting balanced growth that benefits local communities.
