Personnel of the 193rd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya foiled a smuggling attempt by seizing 3,380 pairs of spectacles worth Rs 16 lakh before they could be transported over the international border into Bangladesh.
The BSF has identified vulnerable routes/patches used frequently by smugglers and are dominating the sensitive areas by deploying additional manpower and gadgets, the force said in a press release today.
Meanwhile, on the intervening night of April 18-19, personnel from the BSF’s 110th Battalion rescued 22 cattle along the international border in East Khasi Hills before they could be smuggled into the neighbouring country.
The cattle were being transported towards the border along the banks of the River Shella.
Acting on a specific tip-off, the BSF laid a special ambush and seized all the cattle, although the smugglers managed to get away. The seized cattle were handed over to police for further action.
