In a landmark step toward equitable healthcare for India’s ageing population, the Modi government has approved the health coverage of Rs 5 lakh for all senior citizens aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This has made the elderly population a happier and relieved lot. The AB PM-JAY is set to benefit 4.5 crore families with six crore senior citizens and importantly, the scheme has been extended to all, regardless of their income. Senior citizens aged 70 and above will receive a distinct card under the AB PM-JAY for healthcare coverage. Those already covered under AB PM-JAY will get an additional top-up of Rs 5 lakh per annum specifically for senior citizens in their families. Senior citizens already benefiting from other public health insurance schemes can either continue with their current plan or opt for coverage under AB PM-JAY. So, basically no senior citizens are denied health coverage.
The health coverage for all senior citizens was approved by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on September 12. The health coverage scheme for the elderly is touted as a game-changer for people in their twilight years. From now onwards they won’t have to worry about hefty hospital expenses and can now avail of medical facilities, free of cost. Now, they would get treatment at hospitals, even if they don’t have money. With the launch of this health coverage for all senior citizens aged 70 and above, we are witnessing a historic shift in how the country approaches elder care, a segment with a high disease burden and in urgent need of social protection. The scheme is undoubtedly a crucial step towards fostering a more inclusive healthcare ecosystem. The benefit package needs to be tailored to the population segment so that it encompasses the entire continuum of care.
With the government expanding the ambit of PM-JAY, the senior citizens above 70 years, who are getting benefits of other public health insurance schemes like the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), and Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) will have the option to either continue with it or opt for the Ayushman Bharat. Also, those who are covered under private health insurance policies will be eligible to avail benefits under the AB PM-JAY. As India’s senior population grows, the demand for geriatric care is increasing, and this initiative is a timely response to that need. By providing comprehensive health coverage to our senior citizens, the scheme not only alleviates the financial burden on families but also reinforces the importance of accessible healthcare for all age groups. This expansion will enable more families to access essential services without the burden of overwhelming medical expenses.
