Pressure groups under the banner of the All Selsella NGOs’ Alliance have written to the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills regarding the payment of compensation to landowners who will give or have given up their property for a road project on National Highway 127B.
The construction impacts agricultural land, fruit-bearing trees and shops in the region and the pressure groups wants compensation to br “provided fairly and transparently as per the provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013 (RFCTLARR Act 2013).
Under the act, compensation should include the cost of trees, crops and other assets affected due to the acquisition.
Citing the legislation, the pressure groups want land compensation of three times the market value paid to the landowners and between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh per fruit-bearing tree and between Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 for non-fruit bearing trees.
Small shops of less than 100 square feet should be compensated Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, going up to Rs 50 lakh for big shops greater than 500 square feet.
