Drugs valued at Rs 8.5 crore confiscated in various cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) were destroyed by the Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive), Shillong.
Customs officials said the seized drugs were incinerated today to demonstrate the zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and as part of the Drug Disposal Campaign of the CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs).
The Drug Disposal Committee headed by Spencer M Mylliem, Joint Commissioner, Customs NER, officers of customs and DRI were present. “This was conducted in a secure and environmentally responsible manner, ensuring that these harmful substances are permanently removed from circulation,” an official statement said.
The destruction is being undertaken by Customs in an effort to reinforce its commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking with a view towards enhancing public welfare and the nation’s well-being.
