The Office of the South West Khasi Hills District School Education Officer (DSEO) today organised the district level Science, Mathematics, and Environment exhibition for Schools at Maharam Government Higher Secondary School Auditorium in Mawkyrwat.
Altogether 11 schools within the district participated in the exhibition on the theme “Science and Technology for Society”.
During the exhibition, students presented and explained their models on topics such as Drip Irrigation, Environmental Degradation, Soil Erosion and Conservation, Hydroponic Farming, Water Purification, Life (Lifestyle for Environment) and Computational Thinking, etc.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Yvette R Mawlong while speaking at the event informed that the objective of the exhibition is to popularise science, mathematics and environmental issues among students and to identify and nurture innovative talent among young minds by acknowledging their traditional models, innovative ideas and skills demonstrated in the creation of their exhibits.
“Creating an awareness and curiosity among children towards science allows them to develop a scientific temper beyond the classroom and builds their capacities for critical thinking, problem solving and environmental awareness”, she said, while also stating that science and technology also plays a vital role in meeting the local needs of people, in addressing global challenges such as climate change while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
In-charge District School Education Officer, D. G. Nongsiej in his speech said the exhibition will also help students understand their ability and capacity in these fields. He also mentioned that the winners of the district level will compete at the state level to be held soon.
Following the program, certificates and cash prizes were presented to the exhibition winners.
Deitibaphylla Wanniang of Little Star Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat claimed the first prize followed by Khlainkupar Iawphniaw of Horirai Syiemlieh Memorial Higher Secondary School, Photjaud-Rangthong and Medaniewbha Syiemlieh of Mawkyrwat Presbyterian Secondary School, Laitlawsang in the second and third place respectively.
