In a bid to promote healthy living and foster environmental conditions, Meghalaya schools are gearing up to celebrate “School Nutrition Garden Day” on April 29.
This innovative initiative aims to highlight the importance of School Nutrition Gardens, known as Kitchen Gardens, in enhancing both physical health and educational outcomes.
According to the state’s Education Department, School Nutrition Gardens play a crucial role in combating malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies among children, providing them with freshly grown vegetables.
The department also stated that additionally, they offer invaluable hands-on experience with nature and gardening, fostering a deeper connection to the environment.
“These gardens also serve as educational tools, enhancing children’s understanding of nutritional aspects of vegetables and the harmful effects of junk food,” the department stated in its social media page.
It also stated that School Nutrition Gardens will promote healthy habits and holistic well-being among our students.
The event is poised to transform schoolyards into vibrant hubs of greenery, where students will have the opportunity to savour the fruits of their labour by enjoying freshly harvested salads brimming with vegetables they themselves helped cultivate.
According to the initiative is gaining momentum as schools across the state are setting up Kitchen Gardens on their premises.
In certain districts, schools have even received gardening nets, tools, seeds, and fertilizer from the Horticulture department.
The department also aims to achieve 100 per cent participation by April 29.
