The Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project (MEIDP) will receive Rs 731 crore in funding to improve the state’s tourism industry. An agreement in this regard was signed by the central government and New Development Bank (NDB) on July 10.
The MEIDP is spearheaded by Meghalayan Age Ltd (MAL), a state government company under the aegis of the Planning Department.
In a press release today it first described the funds as a grant before making it clear that the state will have to bear 10 per cent of the cost.
Most of what was in the release was already revealed by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh yesterday.
“Through this loan agreement, we will be able to facilitate creation of new accommodation facilities at places like Kongthong, Mawlyndep and Mawlam. There will also be site upgradation of the venue of the Wangala festival and the Tura convention centre,” Lyngdoh had said while informing that work is already in progress to upgrade the latter, for which Rs 50 crore has been earmarked.
