Hundreds of villagers of Rompa Asim A.king in South Garo Hills have petitioned the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to register Nodina M. Sangma, wife of Sulongsing A Sangma and her biological daughter and son-in-law as the nokma of the village.
The residents quoted Garo practices and cultural norms by the Chra Chatchi and Mahari Nokchik since 1998.
According to the residents, Nodina M. Sangma originally from Silki Achakchiring married Sulongsing following the demise of Nange M. Sangma (Nokma Me chik) in 1996.
“According to Garos practices and traditions, both mother and daughter Nange M. Sangma and Meljini M. Sangma was gives as wife to Sulonsing by the maharis. But after Nange died, Meljini refused to marry Sulonsingh and later the Chra Depante and mahari nokchik sought another woman in Nodina, as wife to Nokma Me-asa with promises to give her everything and she have right to claim to all properties of her own,” the residents said.
The villagers urged the GHADC to verify the case and register Nodina as the nokma.
