Shillong, Oct 23: The Office of the District Transport Officer (DTO), East Khasi Hills held an awareness programme for drivers on ‘Road Safety: Life Protection’ at Maraikaphon Hall, Sohra, in collaboration with the District Administration and Police Department.
Shella Bholaganj Block Development Officer AR Kynta, District Transport Officer MB Roin, Assistant Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) Sohra, local taxi and sumo drivers from various associations and other officials attended the programme.
Kynta urged drivers to maintain discipline and good manners, highlighting the importance of the “Golden Hour” in saving lives after accidents.
Hinge stressed that the programme aimed to reduce accidents by promoting responsible driving and raising awareness among drivers.
Motor Vehicle Inspector L. Nongrum conducted a detailed training session covering essential road safety topics, including over-speeding, use of seat belts and helmets, avoidance of drunk driving, mobile phone use while driving, vehicle maintenance, updating driving documents, overloading, low beam usage, safe overtaking techniques and others.
Nongrum emphasised the three pillars of accident prevention: Alertness, Awareness, and Action.
Drivers actively participated in the interactive session, raising questions and discussing challenges they face on the roads.
The programme concluded with a call to all drivers to adopt safe driving practices and contribute to a culture of road safety in East Khasi Hills.
