The Ri-Bhoi Youth Welfare Organisation (RBYWO) has expressed strong opposition to the proposed conversion of land belonging to the Soil and Water Conservation and Agriculture Departments into an industrial area in Byrnihat.
The Invest Meghalaya Authority (IMA) has written to both departments urging them to convert 137 acres of land into a new industrial area in Byrnihat, which sits near the border with Assam.
Speaking to the media, RBYWO president Ban Kharnaior expressed strong opposition to the Meghalaya government’s plan, which was made under the pretext of promoting the state’s economy.
Kharnaior pointed out that Meghalaya already has industrial estates at Umiam and Byrnihat and criticised the IMA for seeking to convert additional land at 13th Mile.
He further stated that before implementing such plans and policies aimed at promoting the state’s economy, the government should engage with the public. Kharnaior highlighted the need for public awareness and hearings to enlighten citizens about the project. According to him, the public is currently unaware of why the government wants to convert land dedicated to soil and water conservation and agriculture into an industrial area.
Additionally, the pressure group has submitted a letter to the Director of Soil and Water Conservation and the Minister of Agriculture, urging them not to approve the land conversion. They argue that the existing industrial estates have not benefited the people and have instead caused significant pollution and health hazards.
