The Syiem clan of Raid Nongtluh today unveiled a memorial stone in honour of Chak Syiem, a Syiem (chieftain) and warrior of Raid Nongtluh in the year 1858.
The memorial stone has been erected in the courtyard of the Syiem’s office in Umden market by the Dorbar Kur Syiem, Raid Nongtluh.
Chak Syiem, the son of Ngap, ruled the region from 1858 to 1859 as the fourth Syiem of Raid Nongtluh. He is remembered as a warrior of the Raid for his role in leading the community to victory during a war against the raiding forces of the Thaiang community and other intruders during that time.
The memorial stone was unveiled by Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem in the presence of Pa’iem Vincent Eng Syiem, the current Syiem of Raid Nongtluh, along with clan elders, parents, and youths from the Syiem clan of Raid Nongtluh.
The MLA also felicitated young members of the clan who have brought recognition and pride through their achievements in academics, sports, and other fields.
The MLA commended the Syiem clan of Raid Nongtluh for taking the initiative which reflects the commitment to keeping alive the stories and history of the ancestors who played vital roles in shaping the society and community of Raid Nongtluh. He emphasized the importance of understanding one’s roots and the need to document the history and traditions of different Raids, so that they do not merely survive through oral retellings but are preserved in written form, including the customs, traditions, and tales of bravery that deserve recognition within the legal framework of the district council.
He stressed that in life, true leadership lies in humility and respect for others. These values, he said, are the foundation for achieving greatness. In today’s world, where temptations and destructive habits are widespread, from mobile distractions to substance abuse, he urged the younger generation not to fall prey to such influences. Instead, he encouraged them to live responsibly, be mindful of their actions, respect others, and most importantly, stay dedicated to their education and personal growth.
