An electricity transmission tower on the Silchar-Byrnihat-Azara route at Shymplong village, East Jaintia Hills, is in danger of collapse due to road widening and landslides in the area.
The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has therefore urged the public to stay clear of the area until the tower is made safe.
The 400KV D/C transmission line tower number 152 of the North East Transmission Company (NETC) at Shymplong has been “disturbed” due to widening of the village road by the Public Works Department (Roads), an official press release stated today.
“Further, it was also reported that a landslide has been initiated near the tower and chances of further landslides might occur due to heavy rainfall,” it added.
To safeguard against potential collapse, the Executive Engineer of the PWD (Roads) Khliehriat division has been directed to take immediate measures to stabilise against further landslides in the area.
Under the provision of Section 34(c) of the Disaster Management Act 2005, the DC and DDMA Chairman has advised the general public to take necessary precautions and to keep a safe distance from the said tower in order to avoid any untoward incident until completion of reinforcement works by the concerned office.
