The office of the East Jaintia Hills District Medical & Health Officer today organised a health camp to observe World Hepatitis Week under the theme, “It’s time for Action” at the Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) Centre in Khliehriat.
The programme was attended by the DMHO Dr D. Shylla in the presence of Nodal Officer, Treatment Centre, National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVCH) Dr D. Nongpluh, Medical Officer in-charge of OST Centre Dr J. Nongtdu, Hepatitis patients and others.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Shylla said that World Hepatitis Week is being observed worldwide to spread awareness to people concerning the disease and the ways and means which people can adopt to help prevent Hepatitis.
He stressed on the theme and urged the gathering to know their status in respect of the disease by getting tested to prevent themselves from infection of the hepatitis virus. He also spoke on the availability of vaccines and medicines provided by the government to Hepatitis infected people.
Dr Nongpluh in his address spoke at length on the ways and means in which hepatitis disease enters the human body while also highlighting on the impact of the virus on the body particularly on the liver. He also elaborated on various types of Hepatitis, the signs and symptoms as also the different stages of the disease.
