The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has become more a training ground for politicians aspiring to enter the Assembly but there are still some pros in having MDCs who are also MLAs, former KHADC member for Sohryngkham has said.
Speaking to reporters today, Handle Mukhim said that MDCs who later become MLAs also forget the power of the autonomous district council and even try to crush or do away with the power the KHADC possesses.
On the other side of the equation, he said that there is also a great advantage for dual posts.
“A dual post holder can take the difficulty face by the council to the state level as an MLA or minister, which has its own advantage and this advantage increases when the same party is in power in both the state and council but becomes disadvantageous when the party in power at the state level tries to suppress the other party in power in the council,” he observed.
Stating that during his time as an MDC the professional tax was the only source of revenue for the council, Mukhim opined that leakage of professional tax revenue has had a bad impact on the KHADC.
