Every year, from October to January, Meghalaya is a happening place, not only for locals, as it is the season of various festivals that attract tourists from all over the world and India. This is the season of various festivals, ranging from religious festivals to festivals organized by the government, private organizations, and more. It is during these months that tourists to India know about Meghalaya, and it can be said that the state has now become a part of the world map in terms of tourism, because those who come to India are always looking for Meghalaya.
The only important thing to remember is that, along with these celebrations and merrymaking, we also need to preserve our customs and traditions. Sometimes, it is in such places of entertainment or festivals that our youngsters indulge in drinking alcohol, and sometimes it looks bad to see the behavior of our youngsters. The uniqueness of any state is recognized in such festivals as they preserve the customs and traditions.
Meghalaya is one of the states rich in customs and traditions, and on various occasions, people from various parts of the country and the world have praised the richness of our customs and traditions and stressed the need to preserve these customs and traditions from generation to generation. We should thank the various organizations, especially the Seng Khasi, for taking the initiative to preserve these customs and traditions of the indigenous Khasi people.
One of the activities of the Seng Khasi is to preserve the name of the Monoliths by erecting up to 40 such stones on Lum Sohpetbneng recently. Monoliths are special and sacred stones in the belief of the Khun Khasi Khara since ancient times. It is not a matter of discrimination against other religions, but it is a fact that those who really know the traditional customs and traditions are those who still believe in the Khasi religion. Many others who believe in other religions do not know exactly the customs and traditions of us Khasis.
Therefore, the most important thing is to have these kinds of centers to teach our children from an early age to know about the traditional customs and traditions because many of them don’t even know how to wear the traditional clothes. We should not misunderstand that being taught to know traditional customs means we will change our religion. Whether we are Christians, Khasis, Hindus, Muslims, or others, it is important for us, especially our children, to know about the traditional customs and traditions so that they can be passed down from generation to generation.
In particular, we urge the government to open training centers on the customs and traditions of the Khasi, Pnar, Garo, and others so that today’s generation does not forget or know their own customs and traditions. It is only through such centers that we will help our children to know their culture, because it is necessary to know the dress, songs, music, and various rituals so that when we represent the state, people will learn about our culture.
