After allegations were made by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) regarding supposed discrimination against local taxi drivers who are not allowed to park in certain parts of Khyndailad, police in responded, stating that these claims are baseless.
The AKMTTA stated that while local taxi drivers get clamped and fined if they try to park their vehicles in the Khyndailad area, those tourist taxis from outside the state face no such issue.
The Additional Superintendent of Police, K Prasad explained that last year, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of transport convened a meeting with all tourist taxi driver associations to address the issue of parking in Khyndailad. They mutually agreed to allocate parking at the parking lot opposite the State Bank of India main office.
He said that the government has designated seven centres that will be overseen by the Additional District Magistrate, along with other departments, to regulate traffic and explore ways to ease congestion in and around the city.
He noted that some drivers want to park along the Vivanta and City Hut Dhaba roads, which is not permitted. Additionally, he stated that any grievances or reports of illegal activity involving police personnel can be brought to the SP’s office and if an inquiry substantiates the complaint, appropriate action will be taken against the officers involved.
