Sohra police were involved in a high speed chase in order to arrest an illegal Bangladeshi migrant along with two Indian facilitators on Sunday evening.
Based on information provided by a source, personnel of Sohra police station’s mobile patrol unit set up a checkpoint and, at around 4pm, tried to stop an Assam-registered silver-coloured Maruti A-Star (AS 01 AP 0928). However, the vehicle “jumped” the checkpoint, forcing the police to pursue. The vehicle and its occupants were intercepted at Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint.
The driver and two occupants were brought to Sohra police station where it was ascertained that one of the occupants was a Bangladeshi national, identified as Robiul Islam (32) of Pirojpur.
He told police that he works in Bangalore as an electrician and was on his way back to Bangladesh. “It appears he has been using the route regularly,” a police official stated.
The two Indian facilitators apprehended with him were identified as Sujit Hajong (32) and Ravi Singh (38). Both are residents of Ichamati, which is on the border with Bangladesh.
Further interrogations are underway and a case under the Foreigners Act has been registered.
