Shillong, Apr 22: Police have arrested an employee of the Sericulture Department on suspicion of instigating communal violence that erupted in Garo Hills last month.
Ashraful Alom (36) was seen in video footage that was uploaded to Facebook and elsewhere that led to the March disturbance in Garo Hills, which led to the deaths of two people, injuries to several more and the destruction of property. The violence was centred on whether non-tribals should continue to be allowed to vote and stand in elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
Former MDC SG Esmatur Mominin has, under interrogation, labelled Alom as the “main instigator”, police stated today, which led to the breakdown in law and order.
Information on the arrest was provided by the police to the District Sericulture Officer of West Garo Hills as intimation of Alom’s arrest.
Several police complaints have been made against Mominin for his alleged part in causing the violence. After being in hiding, he surrendered himself to police on April 13.
