IIM Shillong today launched its Pakhwada on women’s rights under the theme, ‘Inclusion: Building Relationships with Respect and Dignity.’
The 15-day event will conclude on December 10.
Director General of Police, Civil Defence & Home guards, Idashisha Nongrang inaugurated the event. In her speech she spoke about how society and societal values play on the minds of people and are a critical factor in mainstreaming of women.
She said people’s thoughts have to be positive and accept the inclusiveness of women, which will result in true women empowerment. She informed the audience that India currently has 56 statutes to bring about and further strengthen women empowerment.
Nongrang also suggested that everyone should be aware about these statutes, which will then educate people on women’s rights.
IIM Shillong Director, Prof. DP Goyal said women are today contributing in all spheres of life and at all levels. He said that the institute in collaboration with the Government of India has started a number of programmes to empower women.
Prof. Vishakha Bansal, Presiding Officer, Internal Complaints Committee in her welcome speech told the audience about the context in which theme of the Pakhwada was decided on. Speaking on the theme, she said relationship between men and women have to be based on a solid foundation of mutual respect and dignity.
A video on women empowerment initiatives in IIM Shillong was also screened at the inaugural function.
