In a sudden political development in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the Executive Committee led by Titos Chyne was today ousted from power.
Although the change of equations in KHADC was long expected since NPP wanted to hold the reins in the council after the State Assembly elections, it came so sudden that Chyne was unable to put up a challenge.
This happened after a no-confidence motion was moved by the NPP MDC Bajop Pyngrope against the Executive Committee (EC) led by Chyne on the first day of the KHADC monsoon session.
Interestingly, the 12-member NPP got the help of the six-member opposition Congress to execute the game plan
The reasons cited by Pyngrope while moving the no-confidence motion against the EC under Chyne was that many important council matters were done at Chyne’s personal level without any collective decision.
After the motion was put up for vote, 17 MDCs stood in its support.
Replying to the no-trust motion on the floor of the house, Chyne said that he was removed not on the reasons cited by Pyngrope but “only because the NPP has the numbers.”
“Let it be known to the people that I was removed not because of the claims made but because they have the numbers and the directions from the NPP high command,” he said
Stating that the era of the politics of betrayal has not ended in the KHADC, Chyne said that he was stabbed in the back by the “closest friends who I loved most and whom I have given all that they wanted.”
“I hope the new CEM who will be taking over my place learns a lesson not to trust anyone and knows that his closest friend will stab him in the back,” he added.
Chyne claimed that he has done much to uplift the honour of the council and brought it to new heights and got various laws passed besides help from the World Bank for waste management.
He also lashed out at the Congress MDC from Mylliem Ronnie V. Lyngdoh stating it was ironic that Lyngdoh being the leader of the opposition in the State Assembly is opposing the NPP in the Assembly but at the same time joining ranks with the NPP in KHADC.
“This is nothing but the fact that these are power crazy people who are ready to compromise even with their principles. At the State level, the same people are saying that they cannot work with the NPP as it is linked to the BJP. Are they trying to say that the NPP is linked to the BJP only at the State level,” Chyne said.
Meanwhile, speaking to media persons, Chyne said that the way the house was conducted today was by brute force.
“This was supposed to be a normal budget session and the list of business was also distributed to the members and the budget prepared was to be tabled. On what grounds was this normal budget session directly started with the no-confidence motion? And what happened to the question hours? Is it lawful to suspend all the house businesses for today’s session and directly move to the no-confidence motion?” he asked.
