The platinum jubilee celebrations of Nongthymmai SCC formally concluded on Saturday at Madan Nongthymmai here.
The club was founded in 1944 and had started its anniversary commemorations in 2019 but these were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic the following year.
On Saturday, the club honoured past players and members. The Nongthymmai cricket team won the Shillong Cricket Association’s First Division in 2019 and in 2022, the football team were runners-up in the Shillong Sports Association’s First Division, which means that they have secured promotion to this season’s Shillong Premier League.
Other events on the day included a fete, music competition and pageants to select a Miss and Mr Nongthymmai.
Club General Secretary JC Cajee recounted some of the pertinent moments from the club’s history, going back to pre-formation days and the donation of Madan Nongthymmai by the Kharkongor clan. Nongthymmai SCC was then formally formed in 1944 and gained a name for itself in football, hockey and athletics thanks to famous names of yesteryear, such as H Ladia, Yolster Kharkongor, Piswell Kharkongor and R Phanwar, all of whom have passed away.
Present on the occasion of the closing ceremony were Nongthymmai MDC Latiplang Kharkongor, former MLA Jemino Mawthoh and others.
