The Elaka Nongjngi has decided not to allow entry of the Karbis into Meghalaya until both the state have considered redressing the dispute that arose after the setting up of a tax gate in Khanduli village.
The decision was taken at a meeting held in Khanduli today.
Dolloi of the Elaka, Copiousness Daw said that people from Meghalaya side will also not enter its neighbouring state until peace returns. He said the State government must ensure that peace is restored in the border village.
Secretary of the Elaka, Icydol Pakma informed that the dorbar has also decided to raise volunteers to maintain vigil in Khanduli to ensure that the decision takes effect.
Waheh Shnong of Khanduli, Yooshida Nongspung said tax gate has not been removed till date and guarded by Assam police and the CRPF.
The KAAC tax gate in Khanduli has brought in tension between the Pnar and Karbi communities since April this year with claims and counter claims over ownership of the village.
While residents say that Khanduli falls under Namdong C&RD Block and also under the jurisdiction of the Jaiñtia Autonomous District Council (JHADC) the neighbouring state said it has documents to prove its ownership.
A series of incidents from burning of huts to assaults and a decision not to conduct business with each other was reported as various peace meetings were conducted by the administrations and even social organisations to restore peace there.
